Programme/Project objectives

Phase I is the priority project. Justification for this phase is that the site planned for construction of the regional landfill has been in use as a municipal dumpsite as of 2001 and three cells have been covered with the solid waste while the fourth one is presently in use. Further use of non-sanitary dumpsite would have a side effect on environment as well as on the construction.

Specific objectives

Specific objectives (for phase I) are:

  • To provide sanitary disposal of municipal solid waste;
  • To extend the solid waste collection coverage to 100% by 2012 in urban areas and to 50% in rural areas;
  • To significantly improve the quality of life, sanitation and reduce risks to public health;
  • To prevent pollution of the areas in vicinity of the river Sava;
  • To provide compliance with short-term policy objectives in accordance with the National Solid Waste Management Strategy and the National Environmental Strategy (NES);
  • To ensure implementation of a priority project in Accordance with the National Environmental Action Plan (NEAP) and National Environmental Strategy (NES);
